Exciting Leadership Change: Shorter University President Joins Georgia Nonpublic Postsecondary Education Commission

Shorter University is excited to announce that Dr. Don Dowless has been appointed to the Georgia Nonpublic Postsecondary Education Commission (GNPEC) by Governor Brian Kemp. He was sworn in during a ceremony at the Georgia State Capitol on April 28. Dr. Dowless will represent Exempt Institutions on the Commission.

Since 2011, Dr. Dowless has been the President of Shorter University. He brings a wealth of experience in Christian higher education and academic leadership. His term on the GNPEC is for three years, with the possibility of an additional term. His first meeting will take place on May 19.

Dr. Dowless has a rich background in teaching and missions. He has worked in places like Romania and West Virginia, and has taught at institutions such as Campbell University and Emmanuel University of Oradea. He holds a Ph.D. in Religion from Baylor University and has served in various leadership roles in academia.

Dr. Kirk Shook, Executive Director of the GNPEC, expressed his support for Dr. Dowless, stating, “I am happy to have Dr. Dowless join our Commission. His leadership will be an asset to GNPEC.”

This appointment reflects a growing trend in higher education where experienced leaders are taking roles in policy-making bodies. The importance of representation from various educational institutions remains crucial for addressing the diverse needs of students across Georgia.

In a recent survey by the National Center for Education Statistics, 60% of higher education institutions reported an increasing demand for nontraditional education routes, underscoring the need for informed leadership in education policy.

Congratulations to Dr. Dowless on this well-deserved appointment!
