Indian Navy Unveils Unique Ancient Ship

The Indian Navy is set to introduce a remarkable ancient stitched ship at the Naval Base in Karwar. This ship is a modern recreation inspired by a 5th-century vessel, drawing from artwork in the Ajanta Caves. Union Minister of Culture, Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, will oversee the unveiling ceremony on Wednesday.

The project’s journey began with a partnership formed in July 2023 among the Ministry of Culture, the Indian Navy, and Hodi Innovations. Funding came from the Ministry of Culture. The keel laying ceremony happened on September 10, 2023, and the ship launched at Hodi Shipyard in Goa earlier this year.

Once inducted, the Navy plans to navigate this ship along traditional maritime trade routes, reviving India’s storied seafaring culture. Preparations are already in motion for its first transoceanic voyage from Gujarat to Oman.

Crafted by skilled artisans from Kerala, led by master shipwright Shri Babu Sankaran, this vessel features traditional wooden construction techniques and materials. Its design includes square sails and steering oars, a striking contrast to modern naval ships.

The Indian Navy managed every aspect of the project, from concept design to construction. One of the significant hurdles was the lack of existing blueprints or physical remnants of such ancient ships. Therefore, the design relied heavily on artistic interpretations and required an interdisciplinary approach that intertwined archaeology, naval architecture, and traditional craftsmanship.

Collaborating with the Department of Ocean Engineering at IIT Madras, the Navy conducted model testing to evaluate the ship’s performance at sea. This thorough analysis ensured that the ship’s wooden mast system and overall structure met the necessary standards without using contemporary materials.

This unique vessel stands apart from any other ship currently in service worldwide. The completion of this project not only marks a significant achievement in engineering but also highlights India’s rich maritime heritage and the Navy’s dedication to keeping these traditions alive.

The successful construction of the stitched ship reaffirms India’s long-standing legacy in shipbuilding. It’s a proud moment for all, reminding us of the rich history that shapes our maritime identity today.
