HBO Max has just dropped its first teaser for Welcome to Derry, a prequel to the beloved IT films based on Stephen King’s chilling story. The series brings us back to the eerie town of Derry, Maine, where a shapeshifting clown terrorizes children every 27 years.
This new tease showcases a cast of young characters navigating life in Derry during the 1960s. The creative team behind the series includes Andy Muschietti and Barbara Muschietti, known for their work on the IT films, along with Jason Fuchs and Brad Caleb Kane, who co-showrun the series. Andy also directs four of the nine episodes.
Returning to portray Pennywise is Bill Skarsgård. Initially hesitant about reprising the role, Skarsgård has expressed excitement, revealing that the series takes a deeper dive into Pennywise’s character. In a recent interview, he noted that this new take feels “hardcore.”
“I thought I was done with it. But working with Barbara and Andy again changed my mind. We’re exploring sides of old Pennywise that fans haven’t seen,” he shared.
The cast also includes Taylour Paige, Jovan Adepo, Chris Chalk, James Remar, and Madeleine Stowe, among others, bringing fresh faces to the Derry narrative.
As the anticipation builds, fans on social media are buzzing with mixed reactions, with some expressing excitement for the return of Pennywise, while others are cautious about the depiction of such an iconic character. This series promises both nostalgia for horror fans and new stories that will keep viewers on the edge of their seats.
In a recent survey by a film industry site, 78% of horror fans expressed interest in prequels that delve into character origins, showing that there is a strong appetite for this kind of storytelling.
As we wait for the series to launch, it’s clear that Welcome to Derry aims to build on the fear and intrigue that made the original stories so captivating.
