Former Mercury player Sophie Cunningham is at the center of controversy following a lawsuit that claims she had an affair with Josh Bartelstein, the CEO of the Suns and Mercury. The lawsuit was filed by Gene Traylor, a former employee, who alleges Bartelstein was informed about rumors concerning this alleged affair.
Traylor’s lawsuit also claims racial discrimination, harassment, and retaliation, alongside issues related to security. He mentioned that Cornelius Craig, the franchise’s vice president of security, had been spreading rumors that could harm the organization’s reputation.
The Suns have strongly denied these allegations. Stacey Mitch, the senior vice president of communications, described the reports as “entirely false and morally reprehensible.”
Cunningham, 28, played for the Mercury from 2019 to 2024 and was drafted in the second round of the 2019 WNBA Draft. Recently, she was traded to the Indiana Fever after signing an extension with the Mercury last September.
Although she couldn’t participate in the Fever’s season opener due to an injury, she expressed her excitement about being part of the team. “Phoenix has become my home away from home,” she said, highlighting her connection with fans and the organization.
Bartelstein, 35, has been married to Sydney for two years and has talked about the challenges of his demanding role. He praised his wife for her support, stating, “It’s the best job ever, but it’s long hours, high-stress and pressure.” He officially took on the CEO role in April 2023, aiming to reshape the teams with a focus on culture and values.
While the lawsuit is ongoing, the Suns claim it’s a tactic by Traylor’s attorney, Sheree Wright, to pressure them into settling. Wright has filed multiple lawsuits against the organization, reportedly seeking over $140 million in compensation. The Suns assert that these claims are unfounded and designed to gain media attention.
In recent months, Phoenix has faced various lawsuits from former employees, raising questions about workplace dynamics and organizational culture. As developments unfold, the teams aim to uphold their reputation and address these serious allegations while highlighting their commitment to creating a positive work environment.
