Beloved Cheers Star George Wendt, Famous for His Role as Norm, Passes Away at 76

George Wendt, beloved for his role as Norm in the classic sitcom Cheers, has passed away at the age of 76. His publicist confirmed that he died peacefully in his sleep.

Wendt was more than just a character on a show. He was a cherished family man and friend. His family has asked for privacy during this difficult time.

From 1982 to 1993, Wendt brought Norm to life, appearing in all 275 episodes of Cheers. His performance earned him six Emmy nominations. He once quipped, “The Norm you see in Cheers has been years in the making.” He added that while he shared some traits with Norm, he felt much happier in real life.

Beyond Cheers, Wendt’s character appeared in other series like Frasier, Wings, and even The Simpsons. He attempted to star in The George Wendt Show in 1995, but that series only lasted six episodes. Throughout his career, he also appeared in shows like Sabrina the Teenage Witch and Columbo.

In films, Wendt acted alongside big names. He starred in Fletch with Chevy Chase and Forever Young with Mel Gibson. He even featured in Michael Jackson’s iconic video, Black or White, playing Macaulay Culkin’s father.

On stage, Wendt took on the role of Edna Turnblad in Hairspray on Broadway. He described that experience as “absolute utter joy,” a distinct contrast to his Norm character.

Recently, he appeared on The Masked Singer and in the holiday comedy Christmas with the Campbells. He was also part of a Cheers reunion at the 2024 Emmys.

Wendt’s impact on television is remarkable. For many, he represented the jovial spirit of sitcoms in the ’80s and ’90s. His humor and warmth will surely be missed.
