Vernon Baller Shines as National 3×3 Team Secures Silver Medal: A Journey to Glory

Cassandra Brown, a talented player from Vernon, recently shone at the FIBA 3×3 Women’s Series in Amsterdam over the May long weekend. Representing Canada, she and her teammates brought home a silver medal.

In 3×3 basketball, teams compete in fast-paced 10-minute games. They either play until the clock runs out or one team scores 21 points. Points are scored differently: one point for regular baskets and two points for shots beyond the arc.

Canada had a strong start, winning their first four games. They beat Ireland decisively, scoring 21-8, and took down Poland 21-13 in the semifinals. However, they faced a tough battle in the finals, losing to the Netherlands 20-11.

Throughout the tournament, Brown made significant contributions, racking up 17 points, 14 rebounds, and 6 assists. Her teammate, Paige Crozon, led the team with 29 points, showcasing Canada’s offensive strength.

Now, the team is gearing up for upcoming tournaments in Vienna, Austria, from June 12-14, and Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, from June 18-19. They are also preparing for the FIBA 3×3 World Cup, which takes place in Ulaanbaatar from June 23-29.

Brown stands at six feet two inches and has been playing basketball for over a decade. She graduated from the University of Portland in 2015. Most recently, she played for the Mainland Pouakai in the Tauihi Basketball Aotearoa league and is part of the Canadian 3×3 team aiming for the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Studies show that participation in sports like basketball can enhance teamwork and boost confidence. With athletes like Brown leading the way, Canada’s 3×3 team continues to gain recognition on the world stage.
