Exciting Partnership: Central Health Joins WGU and Social Finance to Boost Nursing Education Funding!

Central Health, based in Austin, Texas, has teamed up with Western Governors University (WGU) and Social Finance. This partnership introduces the ReNEW Fund, aimed at boosting the nursing workforce to better serve the community’s growing health needs.

Launched in 2024, the ReNEW Fund seeks to tackle the nursing talent crisis in the U.S. It provides zero-interest loans to aspiring nurses who might struggle with finances. The initiative covers tuition for the last two years of WGU’s Bachelor of Science in Nursing Prelicensure program. It also helps pay for crucial in-person training and clinical rotations at WGU’s facilities.

Dr. Patrick Lee, president of Central Health, emphasizes the significance of this investment. He believes that removing financial obstacles enables talented individuals to pursue rewarding careers in nursing, which in turn strengthens healthcare in the community.

Scott Pulsipher, president of WGU, highlights the importance of aligning education with job opportunities. This model not only supports students but also helps them contribute positively to their families and communities.

Employers like Central Health contribute to the ReNEW Fund by covering loan repayments for their hired graduates. Those who don’t work with partner employers will repay loans only if they secure jobs that meet a specific salary threshold. This “pay it forward” system aims to reinvest repayments into the Fund, creating a sustainable cycle of support for future nursing students.

Tracy Palandjian, CEO of Social Finance, points out the flaws in the current system. She believes that this innovative approach can significantly improve access to nursing education, enabling more individuals to enter the field.

The U.S. faces a shortage of between 30,000 and 40,000 registered nurses each year. The ReNEW Fund intends to address this gap and deliver better health outcomes across communities. WGU’s flexible online education model is currently available in 24 states, with more expected soon. This allows local employers to train and retain homegrown talent.

The rising demand for nurses highlights the importance of initiatives like the ReNEW Fund. According to a recent nursing workforce report, around 1.1 million new registered nurses are needed by 2030 to meet population health needs (source: American Nurses Association).
