After 8 Years in the Making: How Nintendo Perfected Mario Kart World for Ultimate Racing Fun!

If you asked a Nintendo fan about the chance of a new Mario Kart 8 before the Nintendo Switch 2 was announced, many would’ve said no way. The game released ten years ago still sold incredibly well. With live-service games on the rise, it seemed logical for Nintendo to keep updating it instead of making a sequel.

But, surprise! Nintendo has actually been working on a follow-up for a while. They started thinking about it during the creation of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. Real development kicked off in March 2017, just a few years after the original game came out.

Initially, Mario Kart World was meant for the first Nintendo Switch. The course packs that came out for Mario Kart 8 were a stopgap while Nintendo figured out the next steps.

Creating a sequel isn’t easy, especially when the last game was a hit. Kosuke Yabuki, the producer, mentioned, “In Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, we felt we had perfected the formula. This time, we wanted players to explore a large world.” So, they decided to design a world map.

Nintendo didn’t want to simply add new characters and tracks. They aimed for something bigger than just another iteration like Mario Kart 9.

Yabuki explained that moving from course to course was the norm in past games. With today’s technology, he felt that transitioning seamlessly between courses was achievable. Thus, they set out to create a unique experience.

However, they faced a challenge. Many game series were evolving into open-world formats, leading to a lot of pressure. With the immense success of Mario Kart 8, Nintendo found themselves second-guessing every detail, often saying, “That’s how we did it in the last game.”

Kenta Sato, the programming director, pointed out that gamers can be disappointed if sequels change too much. The goal was to introduce new elements but still keep longtime fans happy.

On top of these creative hurdles, there were technical challenges as well. The original Switch hardware posed limitations, including hosting 24 players in one race.

Sato stated, “Developing for the Nintendo Switch was difficult, and we constantly considered what we might have to compromise.” They even discussed lowering visual quality and frame rates to meet technical requirements.

Once the idea of a more powerful Switch emerged, it opened countless possibilities for Mario Kart World. Yabuki described it as “a ray of hope” that alleviated the previous technical concerns.

Outside of Nintendo, fans on social media have been buzzing about the new game, sharing their hopes and dreams for what Mario Kart World might include. Some wish for nostalgic characters, while others are eager for innovative game mechanics.
