In a surprising turn of events, a man in Norway woke up to find a giant cargo ship in his front yard. The 135-meter vessel, named the NCL Salten, narrowly missed Johan Helberg’s house early one Thursday morning in Byneset, near Trondheim.
Helberg was alerted by his neighbor, Jostein Jorgensen, who watched in disbelief as the ship drifted toward land. Jorgensen attempted to wake Helberg by ringing the doorbell before finally reaching him by phone. “I wasn’t sure if he was already outside,” Jorgensen said, recalling the moment.
When Helberg looked out his window, he was shocked. “I had to bend my neck to see the top of it. It was so unreal,” he remarked. Neighbors described the scene as surreal, with the massive ship towering over Helberg’s home.
The Salten was carrying 16 crew members when it lost its way while traveling through the Trondheim Fjord. Fortunately, there were no injuries reported. Norwegian authorities are currently investigating what went wrong. Interestingly, this isn’t the first time the ship has encountered trouble; it reportedly ran aground earlier in 2023 but managed to free itself.
This unusual incident has sparked conversations on social media. People are sharing memes and jokes about having a “new neighbor,” even though Helberg commented, “It’s a very bulky new neighbor, but it will soon go away.”
A recent survey from maritime safety organizations indicates that incidents like this are becoming more common. With the rise in shipping traffic and larger vessels, the risk of misnavigation in busy areas is increasing. According to the International Maritime Organization, approximately 4,000 maritime incidents happen each year globally.
While it’s easy to chuckle at the unusual scene captured in photos, it raises questions about maritime safety. Experts stress the importance of strict regulations and advanced navigation technology to prevent future accidents.
For now, Helberg’s garden remains an odd tourist attraction, with local curiosity blossoming into a mini spectacle. It’s a curious reminder of how quickly our normal routines can be interrupted by the unexpected.
