Azadi Movie Review: Sreenath Bhasi’s Jailbreak Drama Battles Clichés and an Unforgettable Twist!

Azadi Movie Review: Jailbreak stories always grab attention. The high stakes and thrilling cat-and-mouse chase between escapees and law enforcement create a tense atmosphere. “Azadi,” directed by Jo George, dives right into this excitement. It follows Raghu (Sreenath Bhasi) as he and his father-in-law Sivan (Lal) plan to break out Ganga (Raveena Ravi), a pregnant woman sentenced to prison for a crime tied to a powerful politician. They know their plan has a 99% chance of failing, but the hope for freedom drives them.

Ganga, although safe in prison for now, is at the mercy of Mohan (Boban Samuel), who seeks revenge for his son’s death. Meanwhile, Raghu and Sivan hatch a plan to rescue her as she is moved to Kottayam Medical College to give birth. They enlist the help of a few accomplices, including Pappan (Rajesh Sharma) and others. But as they put their plan into action, the police, led by the determined Rani IPS (Vani Viswanath), catch wind of their scheme, raising the tension even further.

The film firmly prioritizes drama over pure thrills, maintaining a consistent emotional core. Unfortunately, some moments feel overly sentimental. The dialogue often falls flat, adding to the melodrama. Even with these hiccups, strong performances from the cast help drive the story. Sreenath Bhasi excels, capturing the emotional weight of Raghu’s journey.

Jo George’s debut shows potential. However, a faster pace could have polished the film. The editing by Noufal Abdullah maintains the essence but could benefit from cutting out repetitive scenes that slow the narrative. For example, police declarations that “everything is under control” become tiresome when the plot proves otherwise. The subplot involving Saiju Kurup doesn’t add much to the story either.

The climax leaves viewers wanting more. Instead of adding confusion, it feels forced, undermining the film’s emotional arc. The writers could have chosen a different route to deepen the impact. Sreenath Bhasi shines, especially in vulnerable moments, showcasing both pain and resilience, while Raveena Ravi’s portrayal of Ganga captures a heartbreaking blend of strength and fragility.

Although Vani Viswanath’s character has great potential, the writing doesn’t give her much to work with, limiting what could have been a striking performance. Overall, “Azadi” presents a compelling narrative about freedom and sacrifice. While it has its flaws, the combination of tense moments and solid acting makes it worth the watch.
