From Local to Global: Grace Nuhfer’s Journey as a University of Akron Swimmer and Her Unbelievable Achievements

Grace Nuhfer, a recent graduate from the University of Akron, has always been drawn to swimming. As a child, she dreamed big, believing she could become an Olympian. Grace faced significant challenges growing up. She and her sister were diagnosed with brittle cornea syndrome, part of Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, which affected their joints and eyesight.

While other kids played soccer or softball, Grace had to consider her options carefully. Swimming became her sport of choice, offering a way to compete without putting her eyes at risk. “It was my safe place,” she recalls.

Competing at a collegiate level was a huge achievement for Grace. But last year, she reached an even greater milestone: she made the Team USA S13 Paralympic swimming team. Traveling to Paris for the 2024 Paralympic Games was a dream come true. There, she mingled with fellow athletes and felt the excitement of competing in front of a large crowd.

Winning a silver medal in the 100-meter butterfly was surreal for her. “I wanted to show everyone what we accomplished together,” Grace said, highlighting her team’s support throughout her journey.

Now, this past month, Grace achieved another remarkable feat. During the TYR Pro Swim Series in Sacramento, California, she broke the world record for the women’s 200-meter butterfly in the S13 category. Her time of 2:22.78 surpassed the previous record of 2:24.07 set in 2018.

Experts note that achieving such a record is not only a personal triumph but also a symbol of resilience. “Swimming offers a physical and mental outlet that can be transformative,” says Dr. Amanda Rizzo, a sports psychologist. “For athletes like Grace, it can become a lifeline.”

Despite her accomplishments, Grace remains grounded. As she graduates and looks to the future, she’s not sure what lies ahead, but swimming will always be a part of her life. Reflecting on her journey, she remembers a goal her mom once helped her set: “Become an Olympian.” Achieving gold in the Paralympics felt just as meaningful.
