The owner of three shopping centers in British Columbia is set to take on more than two dozen Hudson’s Bay store leases across Canada. In a recent announcement, Hudson’s Bay revealed they’ve reached a deal with Ruby Liu Commercial Investment Corp., linked to Central Walk. Ruby Liu chairs the company, which owns Woodgrove Centre in Nanaimo, Mayfair Shopping Centre in Victoria, and Tsawwassen Mills in Metro Vancouver.

This deal includes Hudson’s Bay stores in these three malls and 25 additional locations in British Columbia, Alberta, and Ontario. The goal? To introduce a “new modern department store concept in Canada.”

Hudson’s Bay is currently restructuring under the Companies’ Creditors Arrangement Act. This has led to the liquidation of around 80 stores as they search for proposals on other leases. The company is still in talks with other potential bidders regarding additional store locations.

Interestingly, earlier this month, Canadian Tire Corporation announced plans to acquire Hudson’s Bay Company’s intellectual property. This includes the HBC stripes, logos, and various trademarks, showing a significant shift in the retail landscape.

According to a recent report by Retail Council of Canada, about 60% of Canadians prefer shopping at stores that provide unique experiences rather than just products. This trend suggests that the new department store concept might focus on enhancing customer experiences to stay competitive.
