An American named Joseph Neumeyer was arrested for planning to attack the U.S. Embassy in Tel Aviv. He brought Molotov cocktails to the embassy and threatened President Trump in social media posts. Federal prosecutors claimed he was trying to carry out a serious plot against American interests.
Neumeyer, 28, originally from Colorado, was recently deported to the U.S. He faced a judge in Brooklyn and is currently being held without bail. According to Attorney General Pam Bondi, Neumeyer is charged with “planning a devastating attack on our embassy in Israel.”
In late March, Neumeyer posted troubling messages on Facebook. One post mentioned killing Trump and even referenced Elon Musk, saying, “We are killing Trump and Musk now.” He left the U.S. in February and arrived in Israel in April. On May 19, he incited followers to “burn down the US embassy” in Tel Aviv.
The U.S. Embassy had moved to Jerusalem in 2018, but the Tel Aviv office still operates. On the day of the attempted attack, Neumeyer approached the embassy with a backpack. A guard intervened and discovered a bottle that smelled of alcohol, suspecting it was a Molotov cocktail.
Although Neumeyer managed to escape, Israeli police caught him later at his hotel. His backpack contained several bottles of ethanol, and he allegedly confirmed they were intended for use in the attack.
Recent months have seen an increase in threats against U.S. embassies, raising security concerns for officials. Just a week before Neumeyer’s arrest, two Israeli embassy employees were shot outside a museum in Washington, D.C. The shooter stated he acted for Palestine, according to an FBI affidavit.
This situation highlights the ongoing tensions in the region. Security at embassies remains a priority, especially in volatile areas where threats can become reality quickly. Experts emphasize the need for more robust security measures at diplomatic sites to protect staff and visitors.
