Revolutionizing Weather Forecasting: How India’s Bharat Forecast System is Transforming Climate Predictions

India has unveiled a pioneering weather forecasting system called the Bharat Forecast System. This new technology, developed by the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology in Pune, enhances weather predictions from a 12 km resolution to a precise 6 km. This means forecasts can now be tailored for specific villages.

During the launch at Vigyan Bhawan, Dr. Jitendra Singh, the Union Minister of Earth Sciences, highlighted how crucial accurate weather forecasting is as India’s economy grows. He emphasized that it can help reduce losses and spur economic growth.

An inspiring feature of the Bharat Forecast System is that it was developed by a talented team of four women scientists. This aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of ‘Nari Shakti,’ which promotes women’s empowerment in science and technology.

This system not only positions India as a leader in global weather forecasting but also supports initiatives like Atmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India. The technology is set to provide advanced forecasting for other tropical regions that face uncertain climate conditions.

One of the key benefits of the Bharat Forecast System is its potential impact on agriculture. It aims to improve resilience, reducing crop loss risks and enhancing extreme weather predictions by around 30%. With a budget of ₹2000 crore under Mission Mausam, the government is committed to upgrading India’s meteorological infrastructure to benefit farmers and various industries.

In today’s rapidly changing climate, the Bharat Forecast System represents significant progress in how India manages weather challenges. It promises to deliver accurate forecasts, improve disaster preparedness, and support sustainable agriculture.

According to a recent survey, 72% of farmers indicated that timely weather information significantly influences their planting decisions. This shows the vital role of technology in enhancing farming practices, making this advancement even more relevant today.
