Dick Van Dyke is a Hollywood legend, but like many, he feels the sting of aging. Now at 99 years old, he recently opened up about losing friends, including fellow actor Ed Asner in 2021. The pair had plans for a remake of “The Odd Couple,” which sadly never happened. “That would’ve been such fun, and we lost it,” he reflected.
His wife, Arlene Silver, 53, pointed out the challenges of outliving friends. “That’s the curse of living to almost 100,” she said, but she also emphasized Van Dyke’s positive spirit. Despite the losses, he remains upbeat. “Well, life’s been good to me. I can’t complain,” he stated, showcasing his resilient outlook.
The couple has been married since 2012, and their bond is strong despite their significant age gap. Van Dyke noted that others doubted their relationship. “Everybody said it wouldn’t work. We just care about each other so much,” he said. This dynamic appears to be a source of joy for him.
Staying active is another secret to his longevity. Van Dyke exercises three times a week and even dances between weight machines at the gym. Ted Danson, who has seen him in action, remarked on his unique workout routine, proving that fitness can be fun at any age.
In January, Van Dyke revealed on Danson’s podcast, “Where Everybody Knows Your Name,” that exercise is essential to his mental and physical health. He believes that this commitment has kept him fit compared to peers.
However, not every moment has been small challenges. Earlier this year, he faced a significant scare when the Palisades Fire threatened their Malibu home. Though flames consumed nearby mansions, he and Silver chose to stay put. Van Dyke even attempted to reach their car during the chaos, but thankfully, neighbors came to their rescue.
