Doctors at Fortis Escorts Hospital in New Delhi have achieved something remarkable. They’ve performed a complex double surgery on a 72-year-old woman from Bangladesh, combining heart bypass surgery and a radical mastectomy in a single operation. This innovative approach is believed to be the first of its kind in India.
Dr. Ritwik Raj Bhuyan, who led the team, emphasized the teamwork involved in this surgery. "Given the patient’s age and complex medical conditions, this was no easy task," he said. "We faced additional challenges by conducting both surgeries at once."
The patient had serious health issues. She struggled to breathe, felt extremely fatigued, and had an infected wound on her breast. Tests revealed that her heart was suffering from severe blockage. In fact, one artery was completely blocked, while another was nearly closed off. On top of that, she had advanced, infected breast cancer that required urgent treatment.
The medical team opted for a robotic-assisted surgery. This technique allowed them to make a smaller incision for the heart surgery, which is less invasive than traditional methods. After about 11 hours on the operating table, the patient was successfully treated for both conditions and left the hospital just 12 days later.
Dr. Archit Pandit BV, the Director of Surgical Oncology at the hospital, noted the urgency of the situation. "The cancer was at a critical stage, and if we had waited, the outcome could have been dire," he explained. The double surgery was essential. By first restoring blood flow to her heart and then removing the cancerous tissue, they tackled both life-threatening issues simultaneously.
Recent statistics show that around 30% of surgical patients may face complications when undergoing multiple procedures at once. However, in this case, the innovative approach proved successful, highlighting the advancements in surgical techniques.
Patients and their families often share a mix of hope and anxiety during such procedures. Social media reactions have shown an outpouring of support and gratitude toward the medical team, reflecting a growing appreciation for high-stakes surgeries that save lives.
In healthcare today, the integration of technology such as robotic surgery is becoming more prevalent, allowing for less invasive procedures and quicker recoveries. This case not only underscores the importance of teamwork in medicine but also illustrates the potential of advanced techniques to address complex health challenges efficiently.
