Elon University is bidding farewell to several beloved faculty members this year. Each has left a unique mark on the university, enriched its community, and shaped countless students’ lives.

Martin Fowler
Martin Fowler has been a part of Elon since 1996. Known for his engaging philosophy classes, he treasures the supportive atmosphere fueled by a favorable student-to-faculty ratio, recently noted as 11:1 in the 2024-25 academic year. Fowler’s books, The Ethical Practice of Critical Thinking and You Always Belonged and You Always Will, showcase his dedication to education. One standout experience for him was a memorable environmental ethics class where students interacted with wild cats, allowing for a unique learning environment. In retirement, he’s looking forward to a long road trip across Canada with his husband, reconnecting with friends and family.

Nancy Harris
After 44 years, Nancy Harris recalls significant changes at Elon, particularly in the early 2000s when the institution transitioned to a university. Harris, originally a biology professor, played a vital role in uniting various disciplines under the Elon College of Arts and Sciences. Her leadership helped nurture students’ specific needs. Harris highlights study abroad experiences, like her winter term course in Belize, as transformative for both students and herself. As she retires, she’s excited about life’s simpler pleasures, such as gardening and birdwatching.

Betty Garrison
Betty Garrison served Elon as a business research librarian since 2000. She influenced many through her library instruction classes. Garrison’s articles examine ways libraries can remain relevant, particularly post-COVID-19, highlighting the evolving landscape of information access. Her commitment to student success led to her involvement in various committees that improved campus life. Now retired, Garrison aims to explore new avenues while cherishing her time at Elon.

Pieter Swanepoel
Pieter Swanepoel, originally an attorney and investment banker from South Africa, found his passion for accounting while teaching in North Carolina. He appreciates the supportive environment at Elon, stating that happiness thrives among students and faculty alike. Over two decades, he’s taught various accounting subjects while also enjoying the first-year course, COR1100: The Global Experience. In his retirement, he looks forward to pursuing hobbies like piano and carpentry.

Joyce Davis
Joyce Davis delivered her final lecture this May after nearly three decades at Elon. Reflecting on her journey, she emphasized the joy of teaching and the strong bonds formed with students. Davis plans to enjoy gardening, reading, and building birdhouses in retirement, but will greatly miss the classroom’s energy and her students.

Mary Jo Festle
Mary Jo Festle, a history professor for 32 years, has seen Elon grow from under 3,300 students to a vibrant university. She has held various roles, fostering a commitment to impactful teaching. Festle, a Distinguished University Professor this year, appreciates the supportive atmosphere that allowed her to thrive. In retirement, she’s excited to travel in her camper and volunteer in her community, cherishing her experiences at Elon.

These professors have not only educated but inspired generations. As they step into retirement, they leave behind a legacy of dedication, connection, and a commitment to lifelong learning.
