HONG KONG, May 27 (Xinhua) — The fifth Asia Summit on Global Health kicked off this week, hosted by the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) and the Hong Kong Trade Development Council. The event gathered over 2,800 experts from around 40 countries to discuss advancements in medical technology.
John Lee, the HKSAR chief executive, emphasized the government’s commitment to making Hong Kong a global hub for health innovation. He noted that the “one country, two systems” framework will help leverage the city’s strengths in this area.
The summit, themed “Fostering Global Collaboration for a Shared Future,” looks at key issues like chronic diseases and aging populations. Lee mentioned the support from the national government to enhance research and health technology. He revealed that the Greater Bay Area International Clinical Trial Institute is now operational in the Hong Kong Science Park, partnering with local medical schools to conduct clinical trials.
Hong Kong is also working to set up a well-recognized regulatory system for pharmaceuticals, introducing a new drug approval mechanism that promises to streamline processes and attract global innovation.
Cao Xuetao, a deputy head of China’s National Health Commission, pointed out Hong Kong’s strategic location and advanced infrastructure as major advantages in driving healthcare innovation. He highlighted the Greater Bay Area’s potential to boost the healthcare sector across Asia.
In a video message, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the director-general of the World Health Organization, stressed the importance of international cooperation to address global health challenges. He called for collaborative efforts to create a healthier world.
The two-day summit is part of the fourth “International Healthcare Week,” which includes the 16th Hong Kong International Medical and Healthcare Fair. This fair has attracted around 300 exhibitors from 13 countries and regions, showcasing local innovations and advancements.
