Recently, the Border Security Force (BSF) made headlines after successfully stopping an infiltration attempt by a group of Bangladeshi nationals at the Indo-Bangladesh border in Assam’s South Salmara Mankachar district.

The incident unfolded when BSF personnel were repatriating 14 Bangladeshi nationals who had crossed into India illegally. Tensions flared when soldiers from the Bangladesh Border Guard (BGB) objected to the BSF’s actions. Reports indicate that the BGB crossed into a disputed area, leading to a heated exchange.

As hundreds of Bangladeshi citizens gathered, the situation became even more charged. To prevent a potential escalation, BSF troops fired warning shots into the air.

According to the BSF’s Guwahati Frontier, this event took place in the early hours of May 27. The BSF spotted a group nearing the border and quickly intervened, halting any unauthorized entry. Thanks to their swift response, the group retreated back into Bangladesh without breaching the border.

The BSF maintains that it is dedicated to protecting India’s borders while also respecting humanitarian principles. A representative noted, “The BSF remains committed to its mission of safeguarding India’s borders while upholding humanitarian values and international cooperation.”

This area has seen previous illegal entry attempts, making the BSF’s role critical here. Additional personnel have been deployed to maintain peace and deter further incidents.

While the BSF has communicated their stance, there hasn’t been an official response from Bangladesh about this situation.

In recent years, border issues between India and Bangladesh have become increasingly complex. For instance, nearly 120 million Bangladeshis live in poverty, pushing some to seek better opportunities across borders. A 2020 survey revealed that around 30% of those surveyed in Bangladesh would consider migrating for work. This context sheds light on why such standoffs may occur.
