49ers Boost Roster with New Signings: Punter Thomas Morstead and Linebacker Chazz Surratt Join the Team!

The San Francisco 49ers have made some notable roster changes, signing punter Thomas Morstead and linebacker Chazz Surratt to one-year contracts. To make room, the team waived linebacker DaShaun White and released punter Mitch Wishnowsky.

About Thomas Morstead
Morstead is a seasoned punter, standing 6’4" and weighing 225 lbs. He was drafted by the New Orleans Saints in 2009 and has played 16 seasons in the NFL. Over his career, he’s participated in 255 games, registering nearly 961 punts for almost 45,000 yards, averaging around 46.8 yards per punt. Impressively, he pinned over 350 punts within the 20-yard line. He’s no stranger to postseason play, having participated in 16 playoff games, where he added 60 more punts.

Morstead’s standout season came in 2012 when he earned a spot on the Associated Press Second-Team All-Pro list and a Pro Bowl selection in 2013. His average yardage that year was among the best in the league.

At 39, the Pearland, Texas native played college football at Southern Methodist University, kicking an impressive 166 punts during his college career and converting a solid number of field goals and extra points.

Introducing Chazz Surratt
Chazz Surratt is a 6’2", 233 lb linebacker who was drafted by the Minnesota Vikings in 2021. Throughout his four-year career, he’s played in 41 games with 19 tackles on defense and 18 on special teams. In 2024, he notably appeared in a career-high 17 games, recording 18 tackles and 10 special teams tackles.

Originally from Denver, North Carolina, Surratt attended the University of North Carolina. There, he made a significant impact, logging over 200 tackles, including 12.5 sacks and two interceptions.

The 49ers’ decision to release Mitch Wishnowsky is notable. During his six seasons with the team, he developed into a reliable punter, averaging 45.6 yards per punt and making a mark in the postseason with consistent performances.
