Tragic Loss: Baylor Football Star Alex Foster Killed in Gunfire Amid Rising Violence and Citywide Curfew

Baylor defensive lineman Alex Foster tragically died early Wednesday after he was found shot multiple times inside a car in his hometown of Greenville, Mississippi. He was just 18 years old.

The mayor of Greenville, Errick D. Simmons, has pointed to a recent spike in violent crime as a serious concern for the community. To tackle this issue, the city has implemented a curfew from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. This move aims to reduce violence, which Simmons described as consisting of “senseless killings.”

According to Major Misty Mew from the Greenville Police, officers responded to reports of gunfire shortly after midnight. They found a man suffering from severe injuries in his vehicle, who died about 30 to 40 minutes later. Currently, there have been no arrests, and police are requesting information related to the shooting.

Baylor University has expressed deep sorrow over Foster’s death. Coach Dave Aranda and athletic director Mack Rhoades released a joint statement saying, “We are heartbroken by the unexpected loss of Alex Foster.” They emphasized their commitment to supporting his family and teammates during this difficult time.

Foster had recently participated in spring practices and was preparing for his first season as a freshman. He was known for his size, standing at 6-foot-5 and weighing 292 pounds. 247Sports ranked him among Mississippi’s top-20 prospects, and he was considered the 69th best defensive lineman in the country coming out of St. Joseph High School.

As part of the city’s response, all nightclubs and late-night venues must close by midnight, with a focus on protecting young people and ensuring parental accountability. Mayor Simmons stressed the need for community safety, saying, "We cannot stand by and let violence rip through our neighborhoods. Enough is enough."
