Microsoft is shaking things up with its Notepad app in Windows 11. They’ve introduced text formatting, which is a big deal for the simple text editor. Dave Grochocki, Microsoft’s principal product manager for Windows inbox apps, shared an interesting insight: "Users can work directly with Markdown, a lightweight markup language. You can switch between formatted text and Markdown syntax easily." This gives users flexibility in how they create and view their notes.

If you prefer the classic plain text experience, you don’t need to worry. You can easily remove formatting from any text. Plus, if the new features aren’t your style, there’s an option to disable them in the app settings.

Interestingly, this update comes on the heels of another new feature. Microsoft has begun testing an AI-powered tool in Notepad that can help generate text. Known as the “Write” feature, it allows users to draft text quickly based on prompts. With these innovations, Notepad is beginning to resemble more advanced word processors like Microsoft Word.

In recent surveys, over 60% of users expressed a desire for more features in basic apps like Notepad. As technology continues to evolve, tools that once were simple are becoming increasingly versatile.
