Ernie Johnson found it hard to speak as “Inside the NBA” wrapped up its run on TNT after nearly four decades. Next season, the show will shift to ESPN and ABC, but Johnson and his crew—Shaquille O’Neal, Kenny Smith, and Charles Barkley—will still be in Atlanta. The final moments on TNT were emotional.

“For the last time, thanks for watching us. It’s the NBA on TNT,” Johnson said, placing his microphone down and leaving the set for good. Starting next season, NBA games won’t air on TNT. The league signed a new 11-year media deal worth over $76 billion, which includes broadcasts on ABC and ESPN, brings basketball back to NBC, and introduces Amazon Prime Video as a new partner.

ABC will now host the NBA Finals. The conclusion of the Eastern Conference finals marked the end of TNT’s long-standing coverage. Turner Sports started broadcasting NBA games in 1984, launching TNT with games in 1988.

O’Neal expressed confidence during the last broadcast. “We’re coming to the new network to take over,” he declared. “I love and appreciate you guys.”

Indiana coach Rick Carlisle also acknowledged this transition. After his team secured a place in the NBA Finals, he praised TNT’s amazing legacy: “We’re all very sad about that.” Many former broadcasters and analysts were recognized, celebrating a vibrant history of NBA coverage.

Kevin Harlan, speaking on-air, reflected on this journey with gratitude. He stated, “It has been an honor and a privilege.” Harlan called the final game alongside Reggie Miller, Stan Van Gundy, and Allie LaForce.

Miller shared his fortune in experiencing both a long career with the Indiana Pacers and 19 years with Turner. Johnson noted that many crew members have landed jobs with NBC and Amazon, thanks to their stellar work.

The emotions were palpable as Johnson’s team said their goodbyes. Smith called it a “magnificent ride,” while Barkley shared his thankfulness for his time in basketball and broadcasting. “I’m lucky and blessed,” he reflected, expressing his appreciation for TNT and the NBA.

This transition reflects the rapidly changing landscape of sports broadcasting. As audiences shift to streaming, traditional networks are adapting. According to a recent study, over 80% of younger viewers prefer streaming services for sports content. This move by the NBA aligns with this trend, aiming to reach fans where they are.
