13-Year-Old Faizan Zaki Crowned Champion of the US National Spelling Bee: Inspiring a New Generation of Spellers!

Faizan Zaki, a 13-year-old from Dallas, just clinched the title at the 97th Scripps National Spelling Bee on May 29, 2025. He triumphed by spelling “eclaircissement,” a word meaning enlightenment, in the 21st round. His performance wowed the crowd, especially when he answered without asking for the usual clarifications a contestant normally requests.

In a close contest, Faizan beat 14-year-old Sarvadnya Kadam, who took second place after stumbling on the word “Uaupes,” a tributary in South America. Last year’s runner-up, Faizan showcased his skills by also spelling “Chaldee,” a dialect related to Biblical Aramaic, correctly earlier in the competition. However, he needed an additional successful spelling to claim the trophy.

Winning means he’ll take home $50,000. When asked about his plans, he mentioned staying up all night to celebrate. His journey wasn’t without challenges; he almost got eliminated in the 18th round but was saved when competitors around him faltered.

In total, nine finalists competed after three days of intense battles. They had to tackle tricky and obscure words, impressing everyone with their focus and skill. The event continues a long tradition, with Scripps sponsoring it since 1925, pausing only during World War II and the Covid pandemic in 2020.

This year’s contestants hailed from all over the U.S. and even beyond, with participants from countries like Canada, Nigeria, and Puerto Rico joining the challenge. Such diversity adds to the event’s excitement, showcasing young talent on a grand stage.
