Heading into Doom: The Dark Ages, I expected a fun start to the series. I’ve enjoyed high-octane shooters but somehow missed Doom and Doom Eternal. I was ready to dive into the lore and explore the origins of the Doom Slayer.

After finishing the game’s 10-hour campaign across 22 chapters, I have to say: the story is a bit of a mess. And that’s okay. The main focus here is killing demons.

You play as the Slayer, a super soldier who excels at taking down demons. Why is he so good? Honestly, who cares? There are demons to slay.

In the game, Doomguy is held by an alien group called the Maykrs, floating above the chaos. It’s like he’s a secret weapon, only called upon for special missions against Hell’s forces.

At first, he’s borrowed by medieval humans fighting the demons—though it’s unclear if they’re from Earth or another planet. The story gets wild, but honestly, players will be too busy shooting and slicing through enemies to worry about the plot details.

During his time with these humans, Doomguy wipes out hundreds of demons with style. Whether he’s leaping from high places or engaging in epic melee battles, he makes it look easy. He joins forces to safeguard some mysterious object from a major demon threat. The adventure takes him from Hell to what might be an alien world. But again, who cares? Chainsaw kills take priority.

While the plot won’t win any awards, the gameplay is a highlight. The mix of parrying and melee adds a fresh twist. By the end, with his upgraded weapons, you truly feel unstoppable. When you get your hands on the *Big F*king Crossbow, it’s game over for the demons.

Even if the plot is puzzling, you’ll appreciate the fear the Slayer instills in his foes—especially after taking down their leader. By the end, he’s taken control of the Maykr ship, making it his base for future demon-slaying adventures. He’s relentless, a force of nature in his mission to rid the universe of demons.

So why does he need to kill them? That’s part of the fun. Just enjoy the satisfying experience of wreaking havoc with your chainsaw shield.

As recent gaming studies show, players favor action and engagement over complex narratives. According to a 2023 survey by the Entertainment Software Association, 67% of gamers prioritize immersive gameplay over story depth. In that sense, Doom: The Dark Ages hits the mark perfectly.
