Remembering Renée Victor: Celebrated Voice of Abuelita in ‘Coco’ Passes Away at 86

Renée Victor, famous for her role as the loving grandmother in Pixar’s “Coco,” passed away at her home in Sherman Oaks, California, at the age of 86. Her representative confirmed that she died from lymphoma on Friday night.

Victor had a long and vibrant career. She appeared in various television series, notably as Lupita in the comedy “Weeds.” However, her portrayal in “Coco,” which tells the story of a boy navigating the land of the dead in Mexico, remains her most celebrated role. Pixar shared its sorrow on social media, expressing that they would always remember her, a nod to the film’s heartfelt theme.

Born on July 25, 1938, in San Antonio, Texas, Victor grew up in a traditional Catholic family and attended an all-girls school. Her passion for the arts blossomed early; she danced in a production of “Carmen” at just 10 years old. She then worked as a singer and dancer at the Stardust Hotel in Las Vegas and toured internationally, performing in Australia, Europe, and Latin America.

Upon returning to Los Angeles, she hosted “Pacesetters,” a public affairs talk show, and served as a translator during the 1984 Summer Olympics. Throughout her life, she maintained a commitment to the arts while also contributing to her community.

Victor starred in the short film “Libertad” in 1996, playing a matriarch trying to hold her family together. She appeared in Robert Duvall’s films like “The Apostle” and “Assassination Tango.” Director Frank Aragon praised her ability to blend humor and drama, creating memorable characters. Interestingly, her character in “Paranormal Activity 5” was meant to die halfway through, but studio executives decided against it, recognizing her charm.

With recurring roles in shows like “ER,” “Dead to Me,” and “Snowpiercer,” Victor’s versatility shone through. In a 2017 interview, she highlighted how her work in “Coco” could educate viewers about Mexican culture, addressing a gap in understanding.

She enjoyed voice-over work, remarking that it allows performers to shine based on talent alone, rather than appearance. Victor’s legacy lives on through her art and family, including her two daughters, Raquel and Margo.

Renée Victor will be remembered not just for her roles, but for her dedication to sharing culture and creating memorable, diverse characters.
