Unveiling Excellence: UC San Diego Celebrated as 7th Best Public University in the US by Center for World University Rankings

The University of California San Diego (UCSD) has been recognized once again, earning the No. 7 spot among public universities in the U.S. according to the Center for World University Rankings (CWUR) for 2025. It ranks 21st among all U.S. universities and 33rd globally, representing the top 0.2% of over 21,000 institutions evaluated worldwide.

UCSD’s strong performance can be attributed to its faculty and research output. It holds the 12th position for faculty achievements and 25th for research. These rankings take into account notable faculty awards and the volume of research published in elite journals.

Chancellor Pradeep K. Khosla emphasized the significance of this recognition. “This acknowledgment highlights our commitment to academic excellence and innovative research, integral in shaping future leaders,” he stated.

The CWUR rankings examine factors like quality of education, alumni success, faculty accomplishments, and the impact of research. Research output plays a critical role, accounting for 40% of the overall score.

This year, three faculty members—Russell Impagliazzo, Cornelis Murre, and Elizabeth Winzeler—were elected to the National Academy of Sciences, a prestigious honor for American scientists. Additionally, six faculty members received recognition from the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, including prominent educators like Amanda Datnow and James D. Hamilton.

As the competition among universities intensifies, UCSD continues to stand out. The recognition is not just a badge of honor; it reflects an institution dedicated to advancing knowledge and addressing global challenges. UCSD remains a beacon of innovation and a leader in shaping the future of education and research.
