Renato Schifani, president of Sicily, reassured the public that experts deem it safe, as the flow has not reached the Valley of the Lions, a popular tourist spot.

The aviation sector isn’t directly impacted as the nearby Catania airport continues operations. A red alert was issued for aviation authorities, indicating the volcanic cloud reaches an estimated height of 6.5 kilometers (over four miles).

Historically, Mount Etna has had a series of dramatic eruptions. In 2001, a similar event led to the evacuations of nearby villages, illustrating how unpredictable and powerful this volcano can be.
