Tamil Nadu is making strides in environmental advocacy with its innovative Chief Minister’s Green Fellow (CMGF) program. This initiative launched a two-year program that has shaped 40 young leaders into champions of climate policy. Over two years, these fellows have developed skills to address climate change and promote sustainable practices throughout the state.

In June 2023, the program selected these promising individuals through the Institute for Energy Studies at Anna University. They each work in one of the 38 districts, collaborating with local administrations on projects linked to the Directorate of Environment and Climate Change (DoE&CC).

Supriya Sahu, the additional chief secretary for the environment, climate change, and forests, emphasized the importance of this initiative. She stated, “This investment is for our youth and vital for a coastal state like Tamil Nadu.” By aligning with World Environment Day themes, Tamil Nadu is demonstrating its commitment to empowering the next generation for a sustainable future.

These fellows gain hands-on experience in environmental policy and contribute to various initiatives like the TN Green Mission and the TN Coastal Mission. For instance, Lakshmi Bhavya Tanneeru, the collector of Nilgiris, highlighted their role in anti-plastic awareness, noting significant positive impacts in her district.

Feedback from previous fellows like G Glory, who now leads projects in the DoE&CC, underscores the program’s benefits. “It offered me firsthand experience and a pathway for further studies,” she shared. Fellow V Rahini, actively involved in policy changes, echoed this sentiment, noting the motivation she derives from working closely with the administration.

As the current batch nears completion, another cohort of 40 fellows is being recruited. This continuous cycle ensures an ongoing commitment to building capacity among Tamil Nadu’s youth in dealing with climate challenges.

The impact of this initiative is reflected in recent statistics. A survey conducted by the Indian Ministry of Environment suggests that regions with youth-driven environmental programs have shown a 25% increase in community engagement towards sustainability.

In addition, discussions on social media reveal a growing interest among young people in environmental efforts. Trends show hashtags related to climate action gaining traction, highlighting a shift towards greater advocacy for the planet.
