  • EV Charging Optimization (Cornell University): This initiative develops tools using real-time AI to manage electric vehicle charging, enabling cars to act as energy storage and support renewable energy use.

AI has transformative potential in environmental efforts, especially if used responsibly. The AI for Climate and Nature Grand Challenge works to turn this potential into reality by:

A 2023 report projected that, if scaled appropriately, AI could lower global greenhouse gas emissions by 10%—equivalent to 2.6 to 5.3 gigatons of CO₂e. However, only a small fraction of global venture capital was directed toward climate tech, making initiatives like this one vital for fostering innovation in sustainability.

Next Steps

The initial planning grants mark just the first phase of the challenge. Later in 2025, up to 15 teams will advance to Phase II and receive $2 million each over two years to scale their solutions. This support will enable them to move beyond basic prototypes and test their technologies in real-world environments.

The Bezos Earth Fund is also partnering with AI labs and tech companies while training environmental organizations on effective AI use. Even as these projects are in early stages, they indicate a future where AI can significantly contribute to environmental health, from managing forests to innovating sustainable food sources.
