Rev. Brian J. Shanley, O.P. Appointed Chair of BIG EAST Conference Board: A New Era for St. John’s University Athletics!

St. John’s President Takes the Helm of BIG EAST Conference

Brian J. Shanley, O.P., the President of St. John’s University, has been named the Chair of the BIG EAST Conference Board of Directors. This announcement came from the league office in Queens, N.Y. Shanley was elected during the Board meeting in New York City and will start his two-year term on June 30, 2025. He follows Creighton University’s President, Daniel S. Hendrickson.

Shanley expressed enthusiasm for his new role, acknowledging the challenging yet exciting landscape of collegiate athletics. "I look forward to building on the achievements of my predecessor and exploring growth opportunities for our basketball-focused conference,” he said.

Shanley took office as the 18th President of St. John’s in 2021. He has a rich background in higher education, previously leading Providence College for 15 years, which positions him well for this role. His extensive experience has already influenced the trajectory of the BIG EAST Conference.

Val Ackerman, the BIG EAST Commissioner, praised Shanley’s leadership and deep understanding of the conference’s values. “His experience and commitment to basketball success will be invaluable as we adapt to changes in the collegiate sports environment,” Ackerman noted.

The BIG EAST recently wrapped up its annual spring meetings in Ponte Vedra, Florida, where discussions included NCAA governance and future broadcasting plans. The focus on maintaining national success in basketball remains a priority as the conference navigates an evolving landscape.

As collegiate athletics faces ongoing changes, Shanley’s leadership may usher in a new era of growth and increased competitiveness for the BIG EAST. With the conference’s rich history and strong brand, the future looks promising under his direction.

This development echoes a broader trend in collegiate sports, where the influence of seasoned leaders is crucial for navigating challenges and maximizing opportunities.
