Empowering Bunbury, WA: Key Steps Forward for Offshore Wind Energy Development

Australia is taking significant strides in the offshore wind industry. Recently, the government announced its preliminary decisions on feasibility licenses for the Indian Ocean off Bunbury, Western Australia.

Following a thorough review by the Offshore Infrastructure Registrar, the Bunbury Offshore Wind Project (Bunbury OWP North) is moving forward. This project could:

• Provide clean energy to 1 million homes.
• Enhance our energy security.
• Bring hundreds of millions into regional economies.
• Support local businesses.
• Create high-paying, long-term jobs.

Two other projects are also in the running for feasibility licenses:

• Bunbury Offshore Wind Project (Bunbury OWP South)
• Westward Wind Project.

For these projects to go ahead, developers need to resolve any overlaps. Before issuing licenses, the Minister for Climate Change and Energy will consult with First Nations groups as per the Native Title Act 1993.

If these licenses are granted, a Wind Industry Committee will be formed in Bunbury to help local communities maximize the benefits from the offshore wind sector.

Looking at other regions, good progress is noted in Gippsland, Victoria:

• Five license holders have received approvals for their management plans.
• Seven others are conducting feasibility studies and environmental assessments under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Act 1999.

Meanwhile, in Hunter, New South Wales, Novocastrian Wind Pty Ltd has asked for more time to assess a feasibility license offer.

The Australian Government aims to improve the offshore wind regulatory framework by:

• Reviewing fees and levies on developers.
• Exploring ways to provide more financial flexibility.
• Ensuring consistency in data collection across the industry.

These offshore wind projects not only promise clean energy for millions but also bolster our energy security and create skilled jobs in regional areas. According to a recent report from the Clean Energy Council, the growth of the renewable sector could lead to a 10% increase in job opportunities by 2025, highlighting the importance of these initiatives.
