The incident occurred when Joss and de Gonzales revisited their old home site, which had burned down following repeated threats from local residents. De Gonzales shared on Facebook that while they were there, they discovered the remains of their dog, which added emotional distress to the situation. In a moment of grief, a man approached them, spewing violent slurs before opening fire. Joss heroically pushed de Gonzales out of the way, ultimately losing his life in the process.
