Milwaukee Man Faces Identity Theft Charges After Allegedly Writing Letter That Resulted in ICE Arrest

A Milwaukee man has been charged after he allegedly sent threatening letters to President Donald Trump while pretending to be another individual. Demetric Scott, 52, intended to stop the targeted man from testifying in a criminal case against him by creating this ruse.

Scott’s alarming plan seemed to work initially. Ramon Morales Reyes, 54, was arrested by ICE on May 22 after Scott’s letters were sent. The Department of Homeland Security labeled Morales Reyes as an “illegal alien” and linked him to the threats. However, his defense quickly pointed out a major flaw: Morales Reyes does not know English and therefore could not have written the letters.

In fact, supporters of Morales Reyes believe he was set up. He was a victim of armed robbery, and critics of Scott suspect this is linked to his false claims. Meanwhile, Scott remained in jail, facing his own charges for armed robbery and battery.

Police discovered Scott’s scheme through recorded phone calls. On those calls, he mentioned needing help to send an envelope and discussed plans to frame Morales Reyes. His comments showed a clear intent to manipulate the situation for his advantage. He described Morales Reyes in derogatory terms and believed that if ICE picked him up, his own trial might be avoided.

Scott confessed during police interviews that he was the writer of the threatening letters, which he sent to various offices including the Wisconsin Attorney General and the Milwaukee ICE office. These letters included threats against Trump, allegedly stating intentions to harm him during public events.

Following the revelation that Scott was the actual author, Morales Reyes’ attorney expressed relief but highlighted the trauma the situation caused his family. They were grateful to see the truth emerge, clearing Morales Reyes’s name.

However, Morales Reyes remains detained as he navigates the complex legal immigration process. He had entered the U.S. illegally multiple times and was in the process of applying for a U-visa, which is designed for victims of certain crimes.

This incident raises questions about the criminal justice system and its handling of immigration matters. Handling deceitful tactics like Scott’s in the courts could have broader implications. How often do similar tactics create chaos for innocent individuals caught up in legal disputes?
