Blumhouse Acquires ‘Saw’ Rights from Twisted Pictures: What This Means for Horror Fans!

Blumhouse Productions is set to acquire the rights to parts of the Saw franchise from Twisted Pictures. This move brings James Wan closer to the horror series he helped create. While Lionsgate will remain a partner, owning half of the franchise, Blumhouse will take a more central role in its management.

Currently, there’s no new movie in development. James Wan directed the first Saw film in 2004, which he co-wrote with Leigh Whannell. Wan has also served as an executive producer on subsequent films.

The Saw franchise revolves around John “Jigsaw” Kramer, a notorious killer who forces his victims into harrowing games and tests. Rather than killing them outright, he presents challenges that pit them against their own limits. This unique approach has helped Saw earn over $1 billion globally across 10 films, extending its reach into comics, video games, and even theme park experiences.

The first Saw movie debuted to $18.6 million and eventually grossed $104 million worldwide.

Plans for Saw XI were previously in the works, aimed for a September 2025 release, but the project hit a snag due to creative differences among producers. A draft by writers Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan was submitted, with Saw X director Kevin Greutert attached. The latest installment, released in 2023, opened to $18.3 million domestically and grossed over $112 million globally.

This franchise, known for its psychological thrills, continues to captivate audiences. Fans are eager to see what Blumhouse will do next with the series. As horror genres evolve, the blend of creative storytelling and audience engagement remains crucial, making Saw a unique case in horror history.
