Join Mumbai’s Green Revolution: Exciting Tree Planting, Cleanups, and Climate Action Initiatives for World Environment Day 2025!

Mumbai: Mumbai celebrated World Environment Day on June 5 with tree planting, workshops, and discussions focused on fighting climate change.

In Bandra, residents took part in a tree planting and cleanup event at Carter Road. Volunteers and officials from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation walked the promenade, noting areas in need of repair.

“The road is falling apart. Broken benches pose a risk to everyone. Instead of ornamental palms, we suggested planting flowering and shady trees in open areas. The garden department agreed. Together, we will enhance our public spaces,” said Sanjeev D’Souza, coordinator of AGNI in H West ward.

Aahwahan Foundation, a non-profit, launched a global initiative to plant over 100,000 trees in 30 days across seven countries, including India. They invite schools, universities, and communities to join in tree-planting events or support through donations. “Protecting our planet is everyone’s duty,” said Braja Kishore Pradhan, the foundation’s founder.

In collaboration with businesses, SYNJUK and SnehaKunja Trust have planted more than 1.5 million trees, focusing on initiatives like mangrove restoration and urban afforestation in Pune. Their goal is to implement sustainable solutions that go beyond just carbon offsetting by working closely with local communities.

On June 8, the Bombay Catholic Sabha Environment forum will hold a seminar titled ‘Living the Climate Crisis: Acting Now for Mumbai’s Future’ at St. Michael’s Church Hall in Mahim. Myron Mendes, a notable speaker and National Facilitator for the Indian Network on Ethics and Climate Change, will lead discussions. That same day, a tree planting and cleanup drive will take place at Sanjay Gandhi National Park in Borivali.

As the climate crisis intensifies, cities like Mumbai are increasing their efforts in ecological conservation. It’s invigorating to see both grassroots movements and organized seminars drive community involvement and awareness. According to a recent survey, around 70% of residents in urban areas show interest in participating in environmental initiatives, highlighting a collective recognition of our planet’s needs.
