Tragic Loss: Elon University Assistant Men’s Basketball Coach Passes Away Unexpectedly

Elon University is mourning the unexpected loss of assistant men’s basketball coach Stacey Palmore, who passed away on June 4. The cause of his death is still unclear.

Palmore joined Elon as an assistant coach in 2022. He played a crucial role in the team achieving its first winning season in eight years, working alongside head coach Billy Taylor. Taylor expressed his deep sadness, stating, “Stacey was a colleague and a friend for over 25 years. I am heartbroken for his son Jaden, his family, and our Elon basketball family.”

University president Connie Book emphasized the need for gratitude and support during this difficult time. She encouraged the community to reflect on Palmore’s personal and professional contributions to the university and its students.

Before joining Elon, Palmore had a notable coaching career. He worked at the University of South Carolina Upstate and Coastal Carolina from 2014 to 2017. He also coached at the University of Georgia, helping develop three players who reached the NBA, including two-time champion Kentavious Caldwell-Pope.

Palmore’s coaching journey began at Virginia Tech, where he earned respect for his recruiting skills and on-court teaching. He played a significant role in bringing talent like Malcolm Delaney and Erick Green into the spotlight.

A graduate of Livingstone College in 1993, Palmore excelled in both basketball and golf, achieving a top 10 ranking nationally in three-point shooting among Division II players. His leadership was evident as he served as co-captain during his junior and senior years.

To honor his memory, Elon University held a memorial service at the Schar Center on June 5, bringing the community together to celebrate his life and legacy.
