Unveiling the Exciting 2025 First Lady’s Mazingira Awards: Celebrate Environmental Excellence with KBC Digital!

The First Lady’s Mazingira Awards (FLAMA) 2025 have officially kicked off! Launched by Mama Rachel Ruto during the Africa Climate Summit in September 2023, this initiative offers students a chance to demonstrate their understanding of environmental conservation.

Florence Amoit, Secretary of Administration in the State Department for Basic Education, emphasized that FLAMA is a unique opportunity to spark creativity and innovation among young people. The initiative collaborates with the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Forestry, and other key partners.

Amoit shared a bold goal: planting 15 billion trees by 2032. She noted that if every student plants just four trees each year, this could lead to over 50 million new trees—an incredible impact for the environment. She stressed the importance of protecting our planet for future generations, saying, “We must safeguard Mother Earth.”

Ms. Elizabeth Koskei, CEO of MaMa Doing Good, remarked on FLAMA’s positive influence across the nation. “This initiative aligns with government efforts to combat climate change and mobilize young environmental leaders,” she said.

The program especially aims to engage about 89,000 students across Kenya, urging everyone to get involved. As KNUT Deputy Secretary General Hesbon Otieno pointed out, the timing is crucial for addressing pressing issues like plastic waste.

Ali Fuad, chairperson of the Kenya Primary Schools Head Teachers Association, praised FLAMA as a significant step toward a sustainable future. He highlighted a two-year collaboration that has embedded environmental consciousness in schools. “We will empower our learners to become today’s environmental leaders,” he reassured.

This edition’s theme, “End Pollution – Conserve the Environment,” aligns with the upcoming World Environment Day, promoting the idea of a cleaner planet. FLAMA also supports the Competency-Based Education framework, helping students cultivate skills like communication, critical thinking, creativity, and digital literacy.

As society increasingly focuses on sustainability, programs like FLAMA are vital. Recent studies show that youth engagement in climate action can lead to lasting change. A report from the United Nations indicates that schools focusing on environmental education see a marked increase in student involvement in local conservation efforts.
