On World Environment Day, CHARGE ZONE®, the country’s biggest electric vehicle charging network, introduced ‘Shwa,’ a creative initiative transforming EV charging stations into striking cultural landmarks. This project marries art and sustainability through large murals that tell local stories, showcasing India’s journey toward a greener future.

Shwa collaborates with both well-known and upcoming Indian artists. These murals don’t just beautify charging spaces; they turn them into open-air galleries. Each artwork reflects an ideal of a sustainable India, steeped in local heritage and environmental hope.

“Charging stations are more than just stops—they’re gateways to the future,” said Kartikey Hariyani, the Founder & CEO of CHARGE ZONE®. He explained that while they’re starting with three murals, there are plans to expand to 10-12 more locations over the next six months. In five to six years, they aim to create hundreds more installations, making these spaces not just functional but emotionally resonant.

The first murals are located in Karjan, Gujarat, and Suryapet, Telangana, featuring the work of artist Rahul Kumawat. These artworks are strategically placed at Supercharging stations where travelers tend to linger, allowing them to engage more deeply with the art and its message.

Devbrat Hariyani, head of Project Shwa, emphasized, “Infrastructure should inspire.” The murals invite people to pause and reflect, blending culture, community, and climate concerns. Each mural features a QR code that takes viewers to a microsite (shwa.chargezone.co.in), which serves as a digital archive with high-resolution images and background stories about the artists and their work.

As India pushes forward in its electric mobility transition, Shwa stands out by integrating art and culture into the push for sustainability. This initiative not only enhances the visual landscape along India’s highways but also ignites conversations about climate action, making the art accessible to everyone.

Experts agree that art can play a crucial role in raising awareness about climate issues. According to a recent survey by the National Endowment for the Arts, nearly 60% of people believe that art has a significant impact on public engagement with community issues. Shwa is a prime example of how creativity can foster a connection to important themes like environmental sustainability.

With over 13,500 charging points across India and the UAE, CHARGE ZONE® is focused on making electric vehicle charging more accessible. Their goal of establishing one million charging points shows a commitment to leading India’s electric revolution through sustainable infrastructure.
