Pasadena Library Awarded $33,000 Grant to Tackle Summer Food Insecurity: Here’s How You Can Help!

Pasadena Public Library just received a $33,176 grant from the California State Library to boost its "Lunch at the Library" program in 2025. This initiative helps tackle food insecurity, which affects nearly 14% of households in Pasadena. This is the fifth year the city has taken part in this program, which aims to fill the gap during summer when school meals are not available.

The program runs at two locations: the Jefferson Branch Library and the Villa Parke Community Center. Last summer, it provided 1,619 free meals to children while also engaging families in fun reading activities. Additionally, 17 youth interns gained valuable work experience through the program.

One happy parent said, “What I like most about the library is the programs for my son. He learns, enjoys meals, and has a lot of fun.” The program goes beyond food. It includes STEAM projects, arts and crafts, nutrition education, wellness activities, and even games and movies. Children also receive books to enhance their home libraries.

In a broader context, California’s statewide initiative served over 270,000 meals at 189 libraries last summer and distributed 125,000 books to kids. However, a report from the Food Research & Action Center notes that only one in six California children who are eligible for free or reduced-price lunches actually get summer meals.

Food insecurity is an ongoing challenge, particularly for new parents in Pasadena, where 10.7% are affected according to the 2022 Pasadena Maternal Health Assessment. This program not only fills stomachs—it helps teens develop skills for the workforce while assisting with meal service.

As one participant put it, “I am so very grateful for the meals. We were hungry, and you fed me.” The Summer Food Service Program, managed by the California Department of Education, reimburses providers to cover costs, making it a sustainable support system.
