Amazon’s ‘Etoile’ Canceled After Just One Season: What Went Wrong with the Two-Season Deal?

Amazon’s Prime Video has decided to cancel Étoile after just one season, despite initially planning for two. This comes about six weeks after the show launched its eight-episode run.

Étoile, created by the team behind The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, dives into the intriguing world of ballet. The story follows the directors of two historic but struggling ballet companies in New York and Paris. In a bold move, they decide to swap their principal dancers, played by Luke Kirby and Charlotte Gainsbourg.

Prime Video had high hopes for the series, ordering two seasons straight away in 2023 as Maisel was wrapping up. However, such arrangements often come with conditions. If a show doesn’t perform well, the network can pull back, and that’s exactly what happened here.

Data from Nielsen shows Étoile did not make it into the top 10 streaming shows in its first three weeks. Given its high production costs with filming in both New York and Paris, renewing the series for a second season was a tough call. Adding to the uncertainty, Amazon MGM Studios is currently experiencing a leadership shuffle. Jen Salke, the former studio head who greenlit the project, left in March.

Viewer reactions have been mixed. Some fans appreciated the show’s fresh take on ballet, while others felt it didn’t quite hit the mark. This cancellation echoes a broader trend in the industry where streaming platforms are increasingly scrutinizing their investments. As of 2023, a report by the Consumer Technology Association noted that 70% of streaming services are reevaluating their original programming, focusing more on viewer engagement and retention.

Étoile featured a talented ensemble cast, including Gideon Glick, Lou de Laâge, and Simon Callow, among others. The series was executive produced by Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino, alongside Dhana Rivera Gilbert. Scott Ellis was on board as a co-executive producer.
