Indian Navy Unveils ‘Arnala’: The Game-Changing Anti-Submarine Shallow Water Warship

The Indian Navy is set to welcome its first anti-submarine warfare shallow water craft (ASW-SWC) named Arnala. The commissioning ceremony will take place at the Naval Dockyard in Visakhapatnam on June 18, led by Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan.

Arnala is designed for multiple missions, such as anti-submarine warfare, subsurface surveillance, search and rescue, and other maritime tasks. Measuring 77 meters in length and weighing over 1,490 tonnes, it is the largest Indian naval vessel powered by a diesel engine-waterjet system.

Notably, over 80% of Arnala’s components are made in India, with advanced technologies from top Indian firms like Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) and Mahindra Defence. This achievement aligns with India’s push for self-reliance in defense, known as the ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ initiative.

The ship was crafted by Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers in Kolkata, with significant collaboration from L&T Shipbuilders. Its construction also engaged more than 55 Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), which supports economic growth and local job creation.

Arnala’s name honors the historic Arnala Fort off the coast of Maharashtra, built in 1737 by the Marathas. This fort played a vital role in securing the northern Konkan coast, just as the ship aims to safeguard India’s maritime interests today.

The vessel features a crest with an auger shell design, symbolizing resilience and strength. Its motto, “Arnave Shauryam,” translates to “Valour in the Ocean,” inspiring its crew to remain courageous amid challenges.

Recent studies highlight that maritime security is becoming increasingly important in the Indo-Pacific region. Experts emphasize that nations with strong naval capabilities are better positioned to protect their interests. This is evident in India’s ongoing efforts to enhance its coastal defense.

In summary, Arnala’s induction is a significant step in bolstering India’s naval strength, reflecting both its historical maritime legacy and modern defense needs.
