ATR Eyes Growth in India’s Aviation Market

European aircraft manufacturer ATR sees great potential in India. They’re currently in talks with various airlines to sell more of their turboprop aircraft, which are perfect for regional routes. A senior official mentioned that India might need around 300 additional turboprop planes over the next decade.

ATR is a collaboration between Airbus and Leonardo, producing aircraft with seating for up to 78 people. Right now, about 70 ATR planes are already flying in India, operated by IndiGo, Alliance Air, and FLY91.

Jean-Pierre Clercin, ATR’s Managing Director, expressed confidence about the Indian market during a recent interview. Without sharing too many specifics, he confirmed ongoing discussions with both scheduled and non-scheduled airlines.

India’s civil aviation sector is booming. The government aims to establish 50 new airports in the next five years, building on the existing 160 operational airports. This expansion is crucial for improving regional air connectivity. Clercin highlighted ATR’s interest in partnerships with educational institutions as another way to strengthen their ties in the country.

Historically, aviation growth in India has been rapid. For context, in 2015, the market was much smaller, with far fewer commercial flights and airports. Today’s surge reflects a wider trend: by 2022, the International Air Transport Association reported that India’s aviation market was the third largest globally.

ATR has sold about 1,800 aircraft across 100 countries. Clercin remarked that while tariffs could fluctuate, ATR aims to keep pricing reasonable for airlines. He emphasized that their turboprop aircraft offer a budget-friendly option ideal for covering smaller, less-traveled routes in India’s diverse landscape.

As airlines explore options to enhance their fleets, ATR’s well-suited aircraft could play a significant role in shaping the future of regional travel in India. With ongoing investments and strategic partnerships, the company’s role in this vibrant market is likely to grow.
