Get Ready for June 18: Indian Navy to Launch Groundbreaking ASW Shallow Water Craft ‘Arnala’

The Indian Navy is set to welcome its first Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) Shallow Water Craft, named Arnala, on June 18, 2025. The event will take place at the Visakhapatnam Naval Dockyard, with Chief of Defence Staff Gen Anil Chauhan officiating the commissioning ceremony.

This ship stands as a symbol of strength and resilience. Its motto, "अर्णवे शौर्यम्" (Arnave Shauryam), translates to "Valour in the Ocean," reflecting the crew’s bravery in navigating challenges at sea.

Arnala is the first of sixteen ships in its class, designed and built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE) in partnership with L&T Shipbuilders. This project supports India’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India) initiative, aiming to enhance domestic defense manufacturing. Over 80% of the components used in the construction are locally sourced, showcasing India’s commitment to self-sufficiency in defense.

Historically, ships like Arnala play a pivotal role in national security. As maritime threats evolve, the ship’s capabilities—like subsurface surveillance and search and rescue operations—are crucial. At 77.6 meters long and over 1490 tonnes, Arnala is the largest Indian Naval vessel powered by a Diesel Engine-Waterjet system, marking a significant advancement in India’s naval technology.

The ship’s name pays homage to Arnala Fort, a historic site in Maharashtra known for its resilience against threats. This connection highlights India’s rich naval heritage and reflects the ship’s mission to protect its waters vigorously.

Moreover, Arnala’s development has involved over 55 Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), stimulating local economies. This collaboration not only strengthens national defense but also encourages innovation and growth within the Indian maritime industry.

The commissioning of Arnala will not only enhance India’s naval capabilities but also assert its role as a self-reliant maritime power in the strategically important Indian Ocean Region.
