Exciting News: BC Housing Plans 164 Affordable Housing Units in Revelstoke by Spring 2026!

B.C.’s housing authority is gearing up for a big project in Revelstoke, aiming to double the city’s affordable rental units. This will be the largest affordable housing development in the area yet.

Back in 2018, the provincial government bought a lot at 420 Downie St. in the Southside neighborhood. They plan to build 164 units for families, seniors, and young people looking for affordable rent. This site used to be home to Mount Begbie Elementary School and is conveniently near the bustling Southside Market.

Construction is expected to kick off in spring 2026, once they secure the building permit. BC Housing intends to work with the Revelstoke Community Housing Society to manage the new homes. They emphasize their commitment to making housing affordable for families in beloved locations like Revelstoke.

To gather community feedback, BC Housing has already held three public meetings on this project, drawing around 150 participants in 2020. They also submitted the necessary rezoning and official community plan updates in 2021. Their development permit application received unanimous support from the city council after a public hearing.

This new project will significantly boost Revelstoke’s affordable rental stock from about 140 to 307 units. The funding for these homes comes from BC Housing’s Community Housing Fund. So far, completed projects include 73 units on Laforme Blvd. and 44 units on Front St., both run by BC Housing. There’s also a smaller group of 24 units on Humbert St. managed by the Revelstoke Community Housing Society.

"We’re seeing improvements in some places, with rental prices stabilizing or even declining in cities like Vancouver," BC Housing noted. "But our work isn’t done yet.”

As of now, housing challenges persist in various regions, with many people still searching for affordable options. Social media reactions highlight this ongoing concern; many residents express anticipation for the project, emphasizing how needed these affordable units are.
