LA Public Schools Safeguard Students and Families from ICE During Graduation Ceremonies

Public schools in Los Angeles have rolled out a new security plan to protect students and families during graduation ceremonies. Alberto Carvalho, the superintendent of the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD), emphasized the importance of keeping immigration officers away from these events. “Every single graduation site is a protected site,” he stated.

Carvalho expressed his concerns about recent immigration activities near schools. To address this, he’s instructed LAUSD police to create safe zones around graduation locations. More than 100 ceremonies were set for this week, and Carvalho wants to make sure parents can enter quickly and safely. He understands that waiting outside can increase anxiety for families worried about potential immigration enforcement.

In addition to monitoring the ceremonies, school officials are keeping an eye on buses and bus stops. They’ve even provided virtual viewing options for parents who can’t attend in person.

“Every child has a right to a public education, and every parent deserves to celebrate their child’s accomplishments without fear,” Carvalho said. He pointed out that the district has a dedicated police force that patrols the schools and supports safety. With around 30,000 of LAUSD’s more than 520,000 students being immigrants—and about one in four being undocumented—this initiative is crucial for many families.

Education experts stress the importance of creating welcoming environments for all students. A study from the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) found that when families feel safe in schools, it positively impacts student performance and well-being. Schools should be places of support, not fear.

Carvalho also reported that federal vans have been spotted near some schools. He interpreted this presence as an intimidating tactic that could increase anxiety among families. “We want our community to feel safe and supported,” he added.

Moving forward, the protections in place for graduation will also extend into the summer school program. Carvalho is set to discuss further needs with local and state officials to ensure that all students have access to education and support, no matter their immigration status.
