In preparation for the yet-to-be-named biopic, she dedicated herself to an intense training regimen. “I loved it,” she shared with W Magazine. “I trained for three and a half months, focusing on weight training in the mornings, kickboxing midday, and hitting the gym again at night.” This commitment helped her gain over 30 pounds to embody Martin, who was a multi-time champion and one of the first women inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame.

The physical changes were striking. Sweeney noted, “I didn’t fit in any of my clothes. I went from a size 23 in jeans to a 27. My body changed so much—I felt incredibly strong.” She posted photos on social media that quickly gained attention, showing off her boxing physique.

Interestingly, Sweeney isn’t new to combat sports. She trained in Brazilian jiu-jitsu for six years as a teenager and has been seen at various UFC events. “My mom always encouraged me to explore different passions,” she said. This led her to a variety of sports, including being on the ski team and playing soccer and softball. She also dabbled in grappling and kickboxing, training alongside boys at her dojo.

Playing Martin took a toll on Sweeney physically. Once filming concluded, she had to shed the weight and muscle she gained in just seven weeks to step back into her familiar role as Cassie in HBO’s Euphoria. While she’s excited about the upcoming film, she’s equally proud of how she approached this challenging role.

According to the latest research from the Sports Industry Association, women’s participation in combat sports has surged, reflecting a growing interest in female athletes like Christy Martin.
