Eric Dane Shares Heartfelt Reflections on ALS Diagnosis: ‘This Isn’t a Dream’

Eric Dane has recently opened up about his battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). In a sneak peek of an interview with Diane Sawyer on Good Morning America, he shared his emotions about living with this challenging diagnosis.

"I wake up every day and I’m immediately reminded that this is happening. It’s not a dream," he said. Despite this, Dane remains hopeful about his journey. After returning to work on Euphoria, he expressed, “I don’t think this is the end of my story. I don’t feel like this is the end of me.”

He first revealed his diagnosis to People back in April, stating, “I have been diagnosed with ALS.” He added, “I feel fortunate that I am able to continue working and am looking forward to returning to the set of Euphoria next week.” Dane requested privacy for himself and his family during this time.

ALS affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord, leading to muscle control loss, worsening over time, according to the Mayo Clinic. The nature of this disease has prompted experts to highlight the importance of support and awareness. For instance, Dr. Brian Ch Hoh, a neurosurgeon, noted that early diagnosis can drastically affect the progression and management of ALS.

According to the ALS Association, about 20,000 people in the U.S. are living with this disease currently.

Euphoria is set for its third season, which commenced production in early February after significant delays. Dane plays the character Cal Jacobs, and he will be joined by new cast members, including musicians and former athletes, marking an exciting expansion for the show.
