Join Us in the Fight Against Hunger: Support Capital Region Food Pantries Today!

ALBANY, N.Y. — Food pantries in the Capital Region are facing unprecedented demand. With food prices soaring, many families are struggling to put meals on the table. This June, NEWS10 and Broadview Federal Credit Union have teamed up for the No Neighbor Hungry initiative to support those in need.

Starletta Renee, CEO of the YWCA of the Greater Capital Region, has witnessed the rise in food insecurity firsthand. She noted, “Without food pantries, many more people would go hungry. We can’t do this alone; prices are rising and our shelves are often bare.” The YWCA serves 94 women and over 50 children, making its pantry an essential resource for the community.

Michael Castellana, CEO of Broadview Federal Credit Union, emphasized the gravity of the situation. “The cost of basic staples is skyrocketing, and government support is inconsistent. Many don’t know where their next meal will come from,” he said. Together with NEWS10, Broadview aims to raise money throughout June, benefiting 15 food pantries in the area, including the Food Pantries for the Capital District, which supports over 70 local pantries.

The Sycamore Collaborative in Schenectady will also receive support. Rev. Amaury Tañón-Santos, the Executive Director, reported, “By the end of this month, we will have distributed 980,000 meal equivalents—more than during the pandemic.” This shocking trend showcases a growing need in the community, which he believes will only intensify.

“If we don’t fill this gap for the thousands of families we serve, many will suffer,” Tañón-Santos added. To encourage contributions, Castellana announced that Broadview will match donations, dollar for dollar, up to $200,000.

Renee praised Broadview for its commitment: “They truly understand our community and are crucial to the work we do.” Castellana echoed this sentiment, stating, “We have the power to make a difference in the Capital Region.” This partnership serves as a reminder that collective efforts can ease the burden on families facing hunger.

According to a recent survey by Feeding America, food insecurity in the US affects 1 in 8 individuals, up from previous years. This stark statistic highlights the urgent need for community support. As the demand for food assistance continues to rise, initiatives like No Neighbor Hungry play a vital role in ensuring families have access to necessary resources.
