Bluffton University has appointed Dr. J. Alexander Sider as its interim president. Known as Alex, he’s been part of the Bluffton family since 2006, serving as a professor, mentor, and most recently, vice president and dean of academic affairs. His deep understanding of the university and its community makes him a perfect fit for this leadership role.
Alex graduated from Messiah College and Duke University, and he has dedicated his career to teaching theology and ethics. He values Bluffton’s Mennonite identity and believes in including a broad community.
In his new role, Alex aims to stabilize operations, strengthen community relationships, and rebuild trust. He believes in the importance of connection, saying everyone has something meaningful to contribute. "Whoever you are and whatever background you come from, you’re invited to be part of this place,” he says.
Outside of work, chaos reigns at home with his wife Kathy, a Bluffton alum, and their two energetic sons, Evan and JD. They spend time caring for their pets, including two cats and a golden retriever, Tucker.
Alex’s leadership comes at a crucial time. Higher education institutions like Bluffton are facing challenges such as enrollment declines and funding issues. According to recent studies, many universities are adapting to these challenges by focusing on community engagement and transparency, two core values Alex promotes.
The president’s cabinet also features strong leaders:
John Burkhart, Vice President of Fiscal Affairs, a Bluffton graduate, balances his love for numbers with a passion for sports and delicious smoked meats.
Claire (Clay) Kleman is the Interim Vice President for Advancement and Enrollment Management. A dedicated Bluffton alum herself, her extensive involvement with the university reflects her commitment to its growth and success.
Phill Talavina, the Vice President for Student Affairs and Athletics, has been at Bluffton since 1985. His vibrant presence in the community makes him a well-known figure, and he finds joy in connecting with students and staff alike.
Dr. Gayle Trollinger has played various significant roles at Bluffton since 1996 and now serves as the Interim Vice President and Dean of Academic Affairs. Her passion for education and community impact is inspiring.
In a time when many universities are looking for innovative ways to engage with their students and communities, the leadership at Bluffton is preparing for a promising future. Their combined experience and dedication promise to guide the university through any challenges ahead, making it a vital part of the Ohio community.
